If you bought a piece of kit to improve the productivity and quality of your business not only would you put it through its paces to make sure that it did all of the things you needed; you’d make sure that it kept working, that it was maintained, oiled, and adapted to changing requirements; as it got old you’d nurture it along so that you didn’t have to shell out for a newer model until there was really no choice, and even then you might keep it to help out as an old trusted friend.
It’s the same with people. At a conservative salary of £20k a year, plus all of those taxes and benefits, you are investing around £150k over 5 years and £300k over 10 years. If that was a bit of machinery you’d make sure you looked after it wouldn’t you! An even better thing about people is that they appreciate rather than depreciate over time – provide that you look after them properly.
